This may be the most important ideological component of our practice. We are here for those people who like the teeth they have and want to maintain and improve them. Let’s keep the teeth you’ve got, for your entire life.

At Biddeford Saco Dental Associates, we are fortunate to have 5 board-certified dental hygienists. Each of whom have over 10 years of experience in the field. They are skilled, gentle and knowledgeable. They offer a variety of services to ensure optimum oral health for each patient. They also take great pride in educating their patients on oral hygiene.

Routine Dental cleanings are a vital part of your oral health. Even with diligent home care, plaque and tartar can build up in places that are difficult to clean. When left on your teeth, plaque and tartar can develop into cavities. That same plaque can also irritate your gum tissue causing it to become inflamed. This process can lead to gingivitis or even periodontitis. If left untreated, gingivitis and periodontitis will lead to recession and bone loss weakening the foundation of your teeth which can result in loose or diseased teeth.

With regularly scheduled cleanings, we can prevent these diseases from causing damage to your teeth and the surrounding tissues. Our hygienists will thoroughly clean each of your teeth while spending extra time in those hard to reach areas. They will also keep records of bone and tissue levels to ensure that we are maintaining adequate support around each of your teeth.

Additionally, our hygienists make sure that they take the time to discuss proper oral hygiene. Educating our patients on preventative care is one of the most important services we provide.

Deep Cleaning

At times, tartar can build up underneath the gum tissue. When this happens, it is virtually impossible to access this area and clean with a toothbrush. However, it is critical that these areas don’t go untreated. Leaving tartar under the gums or on the roots of teeth leads to periodontal disease or periodontitis. This disease will cause bones loss which can cause teeth to become diseased or even loose.

Our hygienists are trained to access and clean these areas. Cleaning these areas can sometimes be uncomfortable. If so, local anesthesia will be used to ensure that the area is numb and the patient is comfortable. Using a variety of instruments and equipment, our hygienists will ensure that all tartar is removed which will allow for the tissue and bone to heal and become more easily cleansable.

Periodic oral evaluations are performed at almost every preventative visit. This allows your dentist to assess and track the overall health of your teeth, gums, and surrounding structures. Using visual inspection and x-rays, we are able to identify any areas that may require additional attention or treatment. Early detection of dental issues is critical to ensuring you keep your teeth! This process is also used for oral-cancer screenings.

Gingivitis or Periodontitis are essentially bacterial infections of the gum tissues that cause damage to the tissue and bone. During you dental cleaning or deep cleaning, our hygienst will remove all palpable plaque and tartar which are home to bacteria. However, it is virtually impossible to remove every single harmful bacteria from your teeth and gums.

We are excited to offer anti-microbial agents that will work in conjunction with your cleaning to kill these disease-causing bacteria. It is is different from an antibiotic you take as a pill, because it’s placed right where you need it. A pill can’t give you the level of antibiotic concentration in your gums that a material like  ARESTIN® can.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has proclaimed community water fluoridation as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century. Fluoride provides 3 major benefits to teeth.

  1. Remineralization – when tooth structure starts to breakdown, fluoride actually recruits other minerals (such as calcium) to rebuild or remineralize tooth structure
  2. Strength – tooth structure that has remineralized with Fluoride is actually stronger and more decay-resistant than natural tooth
  3. Acid Inhibitor – the presence of fluoride in the saliva actually inhibits the amount of acid produced by bacteria by disrupting the bacteria’s ability to metabolize sugars

In Maine, many residents get their water from wells. This might mean you are not getting the appropriate amount of fluoride in your drinking water. During your cleaning appointment, your hygienist will evaluate your fluoride needs. Based on your needs, we provide a Fluoride Varnish, Fluoride Rinse, Prescription-strength fluoridated toothpaste, and/or fluoride supplement tablets.

Sealants have been shown to help prevent decay in children’s permanent teeth. The first permanent tooth usually erupts at about age 6. These new molars have deep grooves that are more susceptible to collecting food which can be broken down by bacteria to create cavities.

Sealants are a tooth-colored resin material that bonds into the deep pits and fissures of the back teeth, thus eliminating the niche that bacteria thrive in and preventing the enamel from subsequent breakdown.  Although children and young adults are the most ideal candidates for sealants, adults can benefit from them as well. Sealants are placed by our hygienists, and they can let you know which teeth will benefit most from sealant application.
